Mental Health Treatment For Physicians

Private Care With Your Profession In Mind

Physicians spend their entire careers making sure everyone else is okay. Most of the time, that involves long shifts, outcomes you carry home with you, and patients who need you to be fine. So when depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use starts showing up in your own life, the hardest part usually isn’t noticing it. It’s deciding to seek specialized mental health treatment for physicians.

Neurish Wellness offers specialized rehab for professionals, giving physicians a private place to step away and be cared for as a patient instead of a colleague. You’ll get straight answers about medical leave, what stays confidential, and what treatment does and doesn’t mean for your career. No pressure, no judgment, and no one deciding anything for you.

Why Physician Mental Health Is Different

Physician mental health treatment is different because of the context around it.

Medicine asks you to absorb things most jobs never ask of anyone. Patients who don’t make it. Families who need you steady in the worst hour of their lives. Shifts long enough that exhaustion stops feeling like a symptom and starts feeling like your baseline. Then you go home, and there’s often no space to put any of it down before the next day starts.

On top of that, medical culture has historically treated needing help as a liability rather than a normal human event. That belief has real consequences. Roughly 4 in 10 physicians say they didn’t seek help for burnout or depression because they were worried their employer or their state medical board would find out. The condition isn’t usually what goes untreated for years. The fear around it is.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you’re in a demanding profession, and something has come up that responds to treatment.

Can I Lose My License for Getting Mental Health Treatment?

This is usually the first question physicians ask, and it deserves a straight answer instead of reassurance.

In most states, no, getting treatment doesn’t put your license at risk. In fact, as of May 2026, 44 state medical boards had removed intrusive mental health questions from their applications. California is one of them, and state law here also prohibits requiring you to disclose a condition that’s being appropriately treated and doesn’t impair your practice.

We won’t tell you the risk is zero. Boards still vary in how they ask. Boards still vary, hospital credentialing follows its own standard, and cases involving patient harm or controlled substances take a different path than voluntary treatment. Your obligation is defined by the state where you’re licensed, and your board publishes its current application.

However, your records are always protected under HIPAA, and treatment information goes to an employer, a hospital, or a board only with your written authorization. You can also get care without involving a physician health program.

Care Options for Physicians

Care should match your situation. Stepping away entirely is a different need than managing symptoms while you keep practicing. Neurish’s mental health treatment for physicians program offers a full continuum, so your level of care can shift as you do.

Our clinical staff works in EMDR, RO DBT, DBT, Trauma-focused CBT, and Internal Family Systems, and our medical director is a psychiatrist trained in neurology and psychoanalysis. Neurish Wellness Center helped me immensely, through group therapy and individual therapy, unravel and discover the underlying issues I had to start my journey of healing. I especially loved the groups. They were diverse and interactive, and helped me open up and identify what I needed to do in order to start working on my trauma and mental health issues. I got weekly exposure to holistic therapies (yoga, sound baths, self myofascial release) that I fell in love with and plan to continue when I return home. The staff is amazing! There were moments that I was frustrated or agitated . But they were patient, understanding and accommodating. Corey, the doctor, got my meds stable the way I could feel functional during the day without negative side effects. And that was important to me. The nursing staff was great, to answer any questions, were knowledgeable and were always there to just chat when you needed someone to talk to. So were the techs. Always available and there to guide you and give you that extra push, especially on your low days. And I had a bit of them, so it was helpful for me because it was important for me to maintain a structure. And this is a structured program, if that is what is you need. But also there is ample down time to relax. So it’s a good combo to help you maintain and form stability. The chef staff was friendly and the food was delish. And the case manager, Mary, will help you in any matter you need taken care of that needs attention like with your job, etc and is upfront and is always available to answer your questions. My therapist, Allie, was helpful and friendly. And with her help, I made the choice to continue my treatment and go to a php program. So thank you Neurish for helping me start my journey to healing. I needed a place like this to discover my underlying issues and I’m glad to have made the decision to come here!

Taking Medical Leave and Arranging Coverage

How long you’d be away depends on your level of care and how you’re employed. If you work for a hospital or group, the Family and Medical Leave Act likely applies, and intermittent leave can make outpatient care workable without a full absence. If you’re a partner or practice owner, the structure is yours to build, and outpatient or virtual care often fits better than a residential stay. If you’re a resident, your GME policies and your specialty board’s rules on time away both come into play.

You are not required to disclose your diagnosis. A request for medical leave with documentation from your provider is typically all that’s needed. Your employer is entitled to know you need leave and roughly how long. They are not entitled to your chart.

Coming Back to Practice

For most physicians, going back to practice is part of the plan from the first assessment onward. It shapes the level of care that gets recommended, how long a stay makes sense, and what comes after it.

Care also continues once you leave. Your level of care steps down rather than cutting off, and it can carry on nearby if you stay in Orange County or from home if you don’t. Medication, therapy, and relapse prevention keep running on your schedule.

Insurance and Verifying Your Benefits

Most physicians have plans that include therapy, psychiatry, outpatient programs, and higher levels of mental health care, though benefits vary. Our team can review yours privately and tell you what’s covered and what your out-of-pocket costs would look like before you commit to anything. You can verify quietly, on your own timeline, without starting treatment.

Where You’ll Be: Our Orange County Locations

Physicians travel to us from across the country, and for many the distance is part of the point. Being somewhere no one recognizes you makes it easier to stop managing how you appear and start actually receiving care.

Residential care takes place in private, luxurious home settings with 24/7 support rather than in a clinical facility. All of our residential locations are in Orange County, California, within reach of John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana and about an hour from LAX.

  • Glenmere in North Tustin. Residential.
  • El Toro in Fountain Valley. Residential.
  • Las Luces in Santa Ana. Residencial.
  • Teller Ave in Newport Beach. Outpatient and continuing care.

You can expect a private and peaceful experience at our resort-style mental health estate in California. Sunny skies, inviting communal spaces, and a serene pool set our retreat apart from other residential trauma treatment programs.

If You’re Reading This for Someone Else

Many people find this page while trying to help a physician who won’t make the call themselves. That’s common, and it isn’t a failure on their part. The professional risk feels real enough that hesitation is rational.

You can talk to us before they’re ready. We can walk you through what mental health treatment for physicians involves, what leave might look like in their situation, and how to raise it in a way that doesn’t corner them.

Taking the First Step

Whether you’re a physician considering this for yourself or you’re seeking physician burnout treatment for someone you care about, a conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We can talk through what treatment would involve, what leave might look like, and what to ask your own board before you decide anything.

FAQs About Mental Health Treatment for Physicians

Will my state medical board find out that I'm in treatment?

Not through us. Your clinical records are protected under HIPAA, and treatment information is not released to a licensing board without your written authorization. Separately, most state boards no longer ask about past diagnosis or treatment on licensing applications, focusing instead on whether you have a current impairment affecting your ability to practice safely. Requirements vary by state, so your own board’s current application is the definitive source.

Can I get treatment without taking leave from my practice?

Often, yes. Outpatient and online virtual programs are designed to work around a clinical schedule, and many physicians start there. If your situation calls for residential care, we’ll tell you plainly rather than fitting you into whatever is most convenient.

What happens when I go home after residential treatment?

Ongoing physician mental health treatment is part of the plan from the start. Our outpatient program at Teller Ave in Newport Beach serves physicians who stay in the area, and our online virtual treatment program allows you to continue with the same clinical team after you return home, wherever that is.

Can I travel to California for treatment if I'm licensed in another state?

Yes. Many physicians choose care outside their home state specifically for the distance and the privacy. Being treated in California does not change your obligations to your home state board, and it does not create any reporting to it.
